Here’s what happens to your body when you stop drinking alcohol for 30 days

Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can have health benefits for your liver, heart, and body composition.

Current dietary guidelines for Americans recommend consuming alcohol in moderation — up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men.

Alcohol consumption has been linked to cancers of the head, neck, esophagus, liver, breast, colon and rectum.

Many use the dry January as a motivator to start the new year alcohol-free.

But while a month’s abstinence from alcohol might seem like a trendy, short-term New Year’s resolution, it comes with several health benefits.

“Benefits can vary from person to person depending on how much this changes from their baseline behavior,” said Dr. Rekha B. Kumar, medical director of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, told Healthline.

Kumar explained that someone who is slacking off but opts for a dry January “may have a sense of control over their health or a sense of accomplishment of a goal they have set for themselves.” Meanwhile, others who drink heavily might “notice even more pronounced physiological effects, such as:

Amitava Dasgupta, PhD, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at UTHealth’s McGovern Medical School in Houston and author of The Science of Drinking, agrees.
