While iodine tops the list, it is not the only micronutrient known to affect the thyroid gland.” In an Instagram post, Lavneet Batra talks about some of the most important nutrients that promote thyroid health.

1) Iodine

Iodine is essential for thyroid function as it supports thyroid hormone production. Nutritionists say “Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are thyroid hormones in which iodine is made and iodine deficiency causes thyroid disease.”

2) Vitamin D

We have often heard health experts recommending proper intake of vitamins. As far as Vitamin D is concerned, it affects the thyroid gland. Low levels of this vitamin lead to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

3) Selenium

According to nutritionist Lavneet Batra, it is a “mineral essential for thyroid hormone production, which helps protect the thyroid from potential damage caused by oxidative stress.”

4) Zinc

Another mineral essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland is zinc, as it promotes thyroid hormone production. Zinc is also responsible for maintaining proper serum levels of T3, T4 as well as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

5) Iron

Lavneet Batra said that the thyroid gland needs iron to “convert T4 to T3”, which is the active form of thyroid hormone. Apart from this, iron deficiency is also associated with thyroid dysfunction.

B vitamins, copper and vitamins A and E are some other nutrients that are essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Being deficient in one or more nutrients can negatively impact thyroid health and increase the risk of thyroid disease.
