The University Of Kentucky Board Of Trustees approved the lease of space from Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, which is owned by Encompass Health, to UK Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) on Tuesday. Beginning in the late summer or early fall, UK HealthCare will begin operating the outpatient services currently provided by Cardinal Hill in the leased facility. Cardinal Hill’s inpatient and trained recovery personnel and facilities will not be affected by this agreement.
Patients with serious neurological or musculoskeletal impairments are cared for by a multidisciplinary team at UK’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department, with the aim of returning each patient to their highest level of medical, psychological, social, and vocational function.
UK intends to integrate and extend its UK PM&R outpatient clinic, which is currently housed at the UK Good Samaritan Hospital. It will also extend outpatient therapy services already available at the Cardinal Hill site and provide a “one-stop-shop” for patients admitted as inpatients from the UK, allowing them to see their UK doctors for follow-up treatment while receiving their continuing therapy at Cardinal Hill.
“UK HealthCare’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) was in desperate need of expansion after five years of steady growth, including doubling outpatient visits,” said UK Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Mark Newman. “Through this agreement, we will be able to include these critical facilities in these critical diagnostic areas.”
Since its inception in 1982, the Department of UK Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has been based at Cardinal Hill. Cardinal Hill was purchased from the Kentucky Easter Seals Society (KESS) by Encompass Health (formerly HealthSouth) in May 2015.
“Since 1950, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital has helped many people recover the independence and trust they need to move beyond their disease or injury,” said Jarrett Millsaps, the hospital’s CEO. “While the Cardinal Hill team will no longer provide outpatient therapy facilities, the extension of UK HealthCare’s outpatient rehabilitation services will be a significant continuation of the outpatient care we offered for many years. Cardinal Hill’s inpatient and professional recovery programs will continue to make a positive difference in people’s lives.”
The extension and renovation will add 19,000 square feet to UK’s therapy services, with a focus on stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injuries, as well as the development of the evidence-based spine and musculoskeletal therapies. A total of 13,835 square feet will be used for clinic accommodation, which will include 27 clinic rooms once completed.
